How to transform your balcony into a private sanctuary
You will need to apply for planning permission and the success of your application will depend largely upon where you live. Larger balconies able to accommodate more than a couple of people have the potential to create noise disturbance, which is much harder to design against, so try to keep it as small as possible if you think your neighbours might object to your application.
If you still think that noise, overlooking or loss of privacy to neighbouring properties would result in a refusal, consider installing a Juliet balcony, which is made up of French windows with an externally attached railing across the lower part. If your property is not in a conservation area, a Juliet balcony would fall under permitted development legislation but only as long as you locate it at the rear of your property.
Another option to consider is the Velux Cabrio window system which has been specifically designed for loft rooms.
